April 25th, 2008 — Dental disorders
Wisdom teeth usually emerge from the gum between the ages of 17 and 24. They are the last of the molar teeth, which are the large grinding teeth at the back of the mouth. Some people never develop wisdom teeth and others have up to four – one in each corner of the mouth.
Wisdom teeth usually cause no problems. They are described as impacted when there is not enough space for them at the back of the mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, infection or damage to the teeth next to them. If the gum around the wisdom tooth is swollen the jaw may become stiff and sore. Infection at the back of the mouth can cause bad breath and a bad taste.
The surgical removal (extraction) of one or more wisdom teeth can relieve these problems. However, removing the wisdom teeth does not usually improve crookedness or crowding of other teeth.

California health insurance companies are now having to face the state’s legislature after there were hundreds of complaints made against them. One of the most common complaints was health insurance companies canceling consumers policies when they became chronically ill.
City Attorney Delgadillo is seeking up to one billion in fies from Blue Cross health insurance company. This is not the first time that the city has gone after health insurance companies. Just a few months ago the city attorney’s office went after Health Net for cancelling a woman’s policy. The insurance company was ordered to pay $8.4 million in punitive damages to a woman who had her policy cancelled after she contracted breast cancer.

April 17th, 2008 — Children Dental Problems
Younger children often get mouth ulcers as part of a viral infection, like herpes gingivostomatitis or hand foot and mouth disease. In older children, recurrent ulcers are often caused by canker sores or aphthous stomatitis.
Your child’s age, duration of symptoms (how long the ulcers have been there), and other symptoms can help you and your Pediatrician figure out what is causing your child’s mouth ulcers.
Herpres Gingivostomatitis …..this is an infection caused by the herpes virus, which is the same virus that cause fever blisters or cold sores (herpes labialis). Although some people get cold sores over and over, the first time you get this infection, instead of just getting a few vesicles on your lips, you get the classic herpes gingivostomatitis infection, with high fever, irritability and small, painful ulcers on the child’s gums and inside his mouth.

As a registered nurse, I come across people daily with no insurance, dental or medical. The consequences for not having any insurance is great. I cared for a lady yesterday that needed a heart valve replaced because she had dental cavities that were not cared for. The patient stated that she didn’t have any money for the expensive premiums.
Last week a report came out of Connecticut stating that 3 people every week die because of lack of health coverage. We live in the wealthiest country in the world and people are dying of no insurance.

Costs of dental implants 2008 range from a single implant that range from $300. to $5,000.000.
Dental Implants are artificial tooth roots. Holes are made into the jaw bones and the artificial roots are placed and covered over. The implants then heal and integrate with the jaw. After healing an artificial top (crown) is placed into the implant and crowns, bridges and attachments for dentures can be placed.
While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.

Health and dental insurance coverage remains two of the most covered health care topics in America today.
As more jobs lay off or reduce expenses, it appears as if the health care coverage for their employees are the first
expense to be reduced.
Another ongoing problem is that even when employers do offer health and dental coverage, the deductions and out of pocket
costs are so high, it still creates a problem for the consumer.
Discount plans have increasingly been an alternative to traditional insurance. These plans are much cheaper and the consumer only pays if they use the plan. These plans have pre-negotiated a certain discount for the consumer. There are thousands of providers accepting this plan.
